Only if I Get to Have the Kickass Hair Too

You Are Jean Grey

Although your fate is often unknown, you always seem to survive (even after death).
Your mind is your greatest weapon, literally!

Powers: telepathy and telekinesis, the ability to project thoughts into the mind of others, communication with animals

Seriously, I needed little mental breaks today but didn't have the energy to REALLY write anything worthy. I hope to return to my usual posting self soon!

Tarot Strength

You Are Strength

You represent both fiery energy and steadfast will.
You are innocent and naive - yet unafraid and undaunted.
Perhaps you don't have the most powerful physical strength...
But your mental powers make up for any amount of muscle.

Your fortune:

Lately, you have been a pillar of ethics and moral strength.
And while things may be difficult, your faith in yourself will come through.
You may need to conquer the animalistic nature of yourself or others, with gentle force.
Although this may seem like the darkest hour for you, victory is near.

Interesting. I am actually thinking of going to get my cards read. Apparantly there is a great gal at the local market on Saturday mornings.

Peacocks Rock!

You Were a Peacock

You carry yourself with beauty, dignity, and confidence.
You are able to see the past, present, and future with clarity.

Ahhhhh ... Pretty

You Are Best Described By...

From the Lake, No. 1
by Georgia O'Keeffe

Scooting Along....

You Are Scooter

Brainy and knowledgable, you are the perfect sidekick.
You're always willing to lend a helping hand.
In any big event or party, you're the one who keeps things going.
"15 seconds to showtime!"

A Balanced Brain?

Your Brain is Green

Of all the brain types, yours has the most balance.
You are able to see all sides to most problems and are a good problem solver.
You need time to work out your thoughts, but you don't get stuck in bad thinking patterns.

You tend to spend a lot of time thinking about the future, philosophy, and relationships (both personal and intellectual).

OK ... I like to think I am a good problem solver. And I am more flexible than people think when I am arguing a point. I do try hard to see both sides of things but I don't always present this mediating force in the beginning. I have to mull things over and then my POV will shift. I thought I had bad thinking patterns but I have realized instead that I have OVER-thinking patterns and this quiz was right - thoughts are always about the future, the why and the who. I find it a real challenge to just live in the now and not second guess everyone. Hmmmm....
Thanks Steph for the link

Happy Birthday to Me

Yes, having a blog is a wonderfully vain and sel-indulgent thing because I get to exclaim "Happy Birthday" to myself on the WWW (aka - the most extensive communication tool on earth!). So today it has arrived and while my original plan was to try and get the day off work to sleep in and enjoy all things lazy ... I find myself up at 7am preparing to get to the airport for a trip to the Tdot. Told you plans would change.

So today I celebrate having experienced 32 years on this planet, in this body, being me. I find myself not sure what that all means these days but I also feel a hell of a lot more calm about the entire thing as well. I guess that is what growth does. The year ahead has a positive vibe about it. All I can say is: stay tuned and I'll fill you in as it is all unveiled!

(On a completely unrelated note: What up with Grey's last night? Man, when that team goes through crisis they really make it a group effort! And George & Izzie .... ?!?)

Celtic Horoscope for My Birthday

You Are A Lime Tree

You are intelligent, hard working, and innately successful.
You try to change what you can in life - and you accept what you can't change.
Tough on the outside, you are actually soft and relenting.
Jealous at times, you are extremely loyal and giving to those you love.
You have many talents, but you don't have enough time to use them.

300 - movie review

Prologue: It is fair to say that I have not written a movie review in a while. I apologize. As life has been busier I have found less time to fulfill my cinematic responsibilities - don't hate me. But this week I saw a film that has jolted me out of celluloid silence. It is THAT good. It is everything for which I go to the movies. It is the first film since Casino Royale (and that was November!) that has met & exceeded my expectations. It is the first great film of 2007. And, muc like the March release of V for Vendetta last year, it is a film that deserves - no! demands! - a big screen viewing (IMAX if you can). The movie is 300.

OK ... so I am gushing. What can I say, I apparantly like the new crop of films based on graphic novels. 2006 was Vendetta. 2005 was Sin City. And 2007 is 300. The last two are brought to us by the genius of Frank Miller who manages to create great emotion with few words and fantastic images. Go to Chapters and find the new hardcover re-release of the "300" novel If you enjoy the images within at all you will love the film. It is an experience in visual verbatim. Scenes are shot exactly as illustrated - the writhing oracle, the Spartan king enjoying a post-battle apple, the ripped cheek of Xerxes, and the arrow-filled dead. Further, the film realizes the tones and hues - the red flashes in the nude sand, the blue beneath the blackest nights, and the garish gold on mystical display. Usually when I speak of eye-candy it is the quick & empty kind but 300 offers a complete feast for craving eyes.

That is not to say that the traditional eye-candy is not there as well. In fact, it is marching all over the screen in toned, bronzed, rippled waves led by the under-appreciated hotness of Gerard Butler (think Angelina"s man-candy in the second Tomb Raider film), David Wenham (remember Faramir from LotR) and Rodrigo Santoro (that hunky foreign guy in Love Actually. The men wear capes, sandals and leather briefs. The gals are wrapped in gauzy muslin and leather straps. And that is it! This film is what everyone hoped Troy would be.

To a degree, 300 fails in the story department. It is a simple legend and some of the emotion has been seen before. The swaying grain fields of Gladiator are here as well. The man vs. beast narrative bookends (ie: Legends of the Fall) tether this tale too. Still, 300 manages to feel fresh out of sheer willpower to take the viewer somewhere new. To put you in the battle. Like Sin City before it, this film limits the viseral impact through heightened graphics. Blood sprays in inky red dots across the screen and then fades with the next image. Each battle sequence takes a new angle and reinforces the energy of the Spartans stand against an immense enemy.

Perhaps the glorified militarization will bother some. In these days, the film can be read as stylized propoganda for a warrior culture that quotes freedom, honour and duty. Unlike Vendetta, that clearly riled against the establishment, 300 may be supporting it with staunch allegiance. Take a stand. Sacrifice all. Glory in death for FREE men. And yet, it is not so simple. For the film may also be read as an indictment of power gluttony. It showcases the strength of a nation on the brink of oppression by a steamroller of greed and hubris. It demonizes desire satisfied on the backs of others. It pits the Spartan (ascetic, frugal, plain) agains the Persian (opulent, decadent, lavish) and that is a very political thing in our times. And so the tale of the 300 can be both inspiring and confounding depending on your view of the world - and that makes good cinema.

Epilogue: The ending is easy on this one. See the movie and decide for yourself. I am positive that the film will be remembered next year come awards time for its outstanding technical achievements. But I wonder, can a movie that is essentially a two-hour battle win Best Picture? hmmmmm.

Bio-Blog #16 - Tannys

This week I present my dear friend Tannys. Tannys became my saving-grace friend while I did my undergrad degree in Sudbury. She started as my T.A. but there was just something about her that made things click and throughout my 3 years at LU she became a great friend (I put her on the "fast track" because she is so awesome!). The thing about Tannys is that she appears very unassuming but she is so inspirational. She has an incredible spirit and ability to support people. She is involved in more activities then I could ever imagine (so many of them volunteer) and is a mom, partner, friend and family-member as well. I really don't know how she does it. On top of all that, even when things are not glowingly fantastic with her she will listen to me bitch about my own troubles. I love her for that. For that, and those "special" nights when she actually decides to join me for a drink.

Complete these sentences:
I am ... a mother first and foremost
I can ... play four handbells at one time while thinking about the 4 different board meetings that I have to attend in one week.
I love ... hiking with my dog Morgan, Max and Bob (in that order)
I will ... hopefully get married this summer without drowning my mother, Bob, or myself (in that order)

What is your sign? Scorpio
Where were you born? Toronto
Where do you live now? Lively (one word oxymoron)

What has been the best place you've visited in between and why?
CapeTown SOuth Africa is the most beautiful place on earth, and my hosts were among the most gracious on earth.

What is your favourite:
Movie: Sound of Music
Book: Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay
TV Show: Sopranos
Drink: Milk with Ovaltine *(no I am not 90 years old)

Who is your celebrity hottie of choice?
Is there any other man on earth as amazingly talented or gorgeous as Val Kilmer ... what a silly question-you should just include his name as the obvious choice for this category duh...

If you could have lunch with anyone in the world ... who would it be and why?
My dad. He is my greatest source of inspiration, and the person that I admire the most.

How do you know Raye?
Met her at Laurentian University when she appeared and asked about being on our board of directors...we become friends, colleagues, and friends again.

What 3 words would you use to describe Raye?
tenacious, timid, and tolerant

Do you have your own website? NO.

Committing

For the first time in 10 years I have actually updated my information to where I am living. I got a new driver's license and the photo ain't too shabby! I am getting a new health card. I am converting my ID to a local address. It is scary and exciting at the same time. To acknowledge that I am going to be IN Halifax for awhile (until at least August 2008) and to feel that I am making a bit of a life here. Yay for me. OK visitors ... bring it on!

Women

It is International Women's Day. It is a day to celebrate women. I got a fantastic email from a co-worker today...

today we celebrate the women ot the world. A chance for me to say that i have a privilege to work for our nation with a group of stimulating and strong women. I really enjoy being in this women world that is Katimavik. Along time ago, in the sixties, my mother (retired social worker) told to her men of her life to share her space equally . all those wemen gave the world a nicer space at work, and in their community for women. Katimavik contribute to a better world, you all make that story a success.
to all the women i'm working with , i say that you are wonderful

So in honour of this special day I wanted to send a shout out to all the women I have know in my life and to those who have inspired me - even if they didn't know it. I also thought I would offer a fun quiz on our "favourite" women archetypes - the gals of "Sex and the City". Usually when I watch the show I feel akin to Miranda - and so I am. What about you?

You Are Most Like Miranda!

While you've had your fair share of romance, men don't come first
Guys are a distant third to your friends and career.
And this independence *is* attractive to some men, in measured doses.
Remember that if you imagine the best outcome, it might just happen.

Romantic prediction: Someone from your past is waiting to reconnect...

But you'll have to think of him differently, if you want things to work.

My Feet are Bigger than you Think

Today I got a great link from a colleague that helps you to calculate your ecological footprint on the earth. It is a short quiz that helps you to identify your impact through food, shelter, mobility and service choices. Check it out and see what kind of mark you are leaving on the earth. My answers are below. My biggest impact? The amount of meat, poultry & dairy I consume in a day and where it comes from. Let me know how many planets you require!

CATEGORY GLOBAL HECTARES
FOOD 3.7
MOBILITY 0.5
SHELTER 0.7
GOODS/SERVICES 0.9
TOTAL FOOTPRINT 5.8

IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 8.8 GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON.
WORLDWIDE, THERE EXIST 1.8 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON.
IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 3.2 PLANETS.

Bio-Blog #15 - Kendra

This week I present my friend Kendra. I met Kendra during my previous Katimavik days and instantly liked her. For me, Katimavik has been a place to meet some of the truly inspirational people in my life and Kendra was one of them. We would sit outside in the cool summer air and talk and drink. Ove the intervening years our lives would cross paths at random times and through unexpected co-friends. The last time I was Kendra was the summer 06 and she was happier thatn I had ever seen her. She introduced me to a new white wine (now my favourite) and to her now fiancee. She also dispensed her usual brand of good sense wisdom and reminded me not to let myself down. She is an amazing person to have in your corner and I am so happy to have her in mine.

If you could have lunch with anyone in the world ... who would it be and why?
Oh I just don’t know…. Do I pick an intellect and sound well informed, an activist and look like I care, a religious leader and give the impression of depth, a celebrity and appear shallow…………
I think if I could have lunch with anyone it would be my grandparents who have all passed on. Why, because I miss them and I am curious and would love to know what happens (if anything) after death. The small issue with this is that they are not “in the world” as the question requested. Oh well!

How do you know Raye?
The Katima connection!

What 3 words would you use to describe Raye?
Energy & Spirit, Integrity, Kind & Caring

Do you have your own website?

My Nephew the Model

So my nephew got his first modelling job this week and is appearing in the Sears Super Saturday flyer. You may find it in your mailbox this weekend. I found it online. You can see him selling 40% off toddler's clothes if you scroll down the page. Could I be more excited?!

Two Weeks to Thirty-Two

I like birthdays. I always have. In two weeks it will be my birthday. YAY! This year is my self-proclaimed "magic" birthday because if you add up the digits in my birthdate they equal 32! This is called a "birthpath number" and is usually added again to get the single digit of 5 for numerology purposes. (You can have fun with real numerology stuff here.)

I have not made any plans for my birthday this year which is quite unlike me. Currently there are a limited number of people in the world with whom I would really like to spend my special day (and the closest one is 3 hours away) so I have decided to be mellow and celebrate with myself doing MY favourite things. I am hoping to get the day off work so I can sleep in, go to a matinee and generally be lazy. Of course this plan could change completely in the next two weeks - who knows! Anyone interested in a "surprise" visit is more than welcome!

Me as a Baobob Tree

This is another horoscope post because I haven't done one of those in awhile and I found this week wonderfully complimentary and inspiring (thanks Rob!). Anyway, the picture is of a baobob tree and I didn't take it (although it totally looks like one I would take) and it is the theme of my horoscope...

Native to Africa and Australia, baobob trees are oddly beautiful, with thick, bulbous trunks that can grow partially hollow and thus serve as shelters for people and animals. They have an enormous capacity for storing water, allowing them to survive droughts. Humans carve and paint their fruits, making them into ornaments, and also use their leaves, fruits and bark for food and drink. The tree's large white flowers open only at night and are pollinated by bats. In all these ways, you remind me of a baobob right now, Pisces. You're freakishly gorgeous, have enormous staying power and hundreds of uses, are a rich source of nourishment and comfort, and bloom under the moonlight, when you do your best collaborative work.

I like the affirmation in this horoscope as it fits my rejuvenating mood these days. It also helps that a friend of mine said I am ALL of those things just two days ago. Here's hoping I can keep up the momentum in the months ahead.
