Waitress - movie review

Sometimes a girl needs a little bit sweetness in her life. Sometimes you need to ignor the mainstream lineups that are crowding the multiplex on a Saturday night and catch a flick praised at Sundance. And if you happen to find yourself in one of these situations then I suggest you spend some time with Waitress.


Waitress is a tale of Jenna (Keri Russell) who makes excellent pies in a small town diner and lives a devastating bad life. She is married to an ass of a husband. She is trapped. She is sad. And she is pregnant with a baby she doesn't want thanks to the night her ass of a husband got her drunk and had his way with her. And then things start to change. Her coworkers start to find their own loves. She meets a new doctor (Nathan Fillion as the most neurotic romantic lead ever) and embarks on an affair. She learns to smile again. And she rediscovers joy in life.

There is something wonderfully simple about Waitress that makes it satisfying even though it is a basic indie film. The production quality is minimal. The film is populated with cliche characters of a small town that go through the paces of typical self-discovery films. And yet it still feels fresh and quirky and enjoyable. In fact the film is able to take elements from other little films (notably Jennifer Aniston's indie vehicle The Good Girl and Sarah Michelle Geller's crapfest Simply Irresistable) and do them better. By the time the last slice of this sentimental pie is served you will also be a fan. And while it won't break any box office records, this film deserves its place on the summer menu for all those moments when you need something a small that goes down easy.
